Endangered bird hops to rescue of nudist beach
Thursday, 25 September 2008
The nudists who have frequented Eastney beach in Portsmouth for more than a century thought they were on the way out.Qinetiq, a British defence technology company, wants to build 131 luxury apartments there, potentially leaving the nudists very unwelcome.But help is at hand, and it has taken the form of a tiny and rather rare friend. The Dartford warbler is one of the few species of warbler to winter in Britain. And now it is has come to the nudists’ rescue.
Qinetiq had received planning permission to develop its flats on Eastney beach on the condition they widen an access road leading to the land. But at a special meeting of the city council earlier this week, protesters successfully pushed the council to carry out a further environmental study to see if the flats will endanger the bird’s natural habitat.
As a result, the warbler may soon discover its safest haven is in the company of naked humans.

Would be grateful if you could encourage others to support us by writing as;
Letters to: Mr David Williams, Chief Executive
Portsmouth City Council,
Guildhall Square, Portsmouth PO1 2BG
E-mails to: David.Williams@portsmouthcc.gov.uk
One such letter;
Dear Mr Williams,
Fort Cumberland SINC
On 11th January 2008 and on 29th August 2008, your Council wrote to QinetiQ demanding that an independent “Bird Survey” be carried out on the Fort Cumberland SINC under Regulation 19,Town & Country Planning Act [Environmental Assessment Regulations] 1999 .
Please let me know what is happening about this survey.
As a regular visitor to the SINC at Fort Cumberland, Eastney, I implore you to consider the wishes of residents and other visitors to Eastney by insisting that this survey is carried out.
In this the 2nd most overcrowded city in England [itself now,officially, the 3rd most densely populated country in the world], it would be a tragedy to damage such a SINC without a proper survey. Let us think not only of ourselves but of the generations who follow and the wishes of those who fought and fell in earlier generations so that we might enjoy this “Green & Pleasant Land”.
Yours etc.,etc
